Reading Challenge- The Fellowship of the Ring

This book starts at Bilbo and Frodo Baggins joint birthday, Bilbo turning 111, and Frodo turning 33. Bilbo runs away, but leaves his house and the ring to Frodo. After many travels, Gandalf the wizard tells Frodo that Bilbo’s ring is actually the one ring, the dark lord Sauron’s ring of power, that can grant Sauron very strong power if he ever finds it. However, Frodo’s gardener, Sam Gangee overhears. After a decision by Gandalf, they are both to go to the cracks of doom and throw the ring in to destroy it. Sam makes Frodo his master and promises to protect him. They find 2 other hoppits Meriadoc Brandibuc (Merry) and Peregin Took (Pippin) and they join him. On the way they are hunted by black rider, or ringwraiths, servants of Sauron, and almost get lost in the marshes, but the master of the forest, Tom Bombdail, saves them. He sends them on their journey to Bree, where they meet a man who calls himslef Strider, who is one of Gandalf’s friends. He leads them to the elven village of Rivendell, where the take part in a council of Elrond, the leader of the elves. A fellowship of 9 is formed to get the ring to Mordor, the land of the orcs and Sauron, where the ring can be destroyed. The company is: Hobbits Frodo, Sam, Merry, and Pippin; The Wizard Gandalf the Grey; The men Aragon (Strider) and Boromir; The elf Legolas, and the dwarf Gimli. The 9 travel over many treacherous places, while encountering challenges and dangers. I like this book because of the excitement and adventure in it, bu tit is long and you can get bored. 8/10.
