Overview: It is the future from now: there is no war, no hunger, no pain and no climate change. Everyone is provided for everything they need and no one in the community wants for anything. Each Family Unit is entitled to one female and male child; each member of The Community has their occupation circumspectly chosen for them by the Committee of Elders by the age of 12, they never make a mistake and they never change or dislike their job. Jonas, a twelve-year-old boy, had never ever thought there was anything wrong with his Community, until the time he is selected as the Receiver of Memory at The Ceremony; his life is turned completely upside down. Jonas realizes that The Community is not as wonderful as it had always seemed. Although they appear to have everything they need, they are missing something that is of excellent importance. It is up to Jonas and the Giver, to find what long ago had been lost…… but can Jonas successfully helps to improve the community or would the Community keep getting worse by the second?
Comments: This is a truly mesmerizing, moving and unforgettable book! There is a really deep moral in this book “Sometimes, when we think that something is perfect, but actually there are some more improvements or it might even be worse than the one that we have improved it into.” And “Don’t just look on one side of things; you also have to look on the other side to know things completely and from different perspectives.” And “All things has a good side and a bad side to it, nothing is perfect.”
When the Community takes away the pain and wars, it also took away the pleasures of life, in there you don’t need to work hard for things to get anything, you have everything you need; on the other hand, you cannot feel the pleasure when you have worked hard on something and you finally got it! Although the Community has not pain or war or fear, it also doesn’t have very much entertainment or joy because it is always routine jobs every day!
I am really touched by this book because it also taught us that: “You have to treasure what you have now, because you never know if you might lose it in the next second or not.” And “Because life has good and bad, therefore you will cherish the good ones since there is a comparison between good and bad; if there is no bad, you wouldn’t know what is good.”
I have learned a lot from this book and I believe you will, too. I suggest you to read this book!
