This book is set in a alternate universe, were us humans have invented space travel, the empire is controlled by 1 Emperor who has passed away, but his orders are carried from his will. One of those orders are to station 3 legions in this deserted barren planet. Among those men are Guardsman Hawke, who has a tendency to slack off. Unfortunately, he and his squad are ambushed, and he is the only one who survived. Meanwhile, the attacker, Honsou sends for his commander, who then launches a raid on the bunker and retreats. Meanwhile, the defenders can't get to the bunker and sent scouts. The Iron Marines have attacked several more bunkers and are moving on the Tor Distol. Meanwhile, Hawkes radios a message to warn about the force. That is what I've read so far.
