There was more, but Bena dn Sophie didn't hear it. Lara had bounded on to the stage, to the cheers of 613 school children, the restrained yelling of one ten-year-old boy and the excited squeling of one little girl.
The spy dog stood proudly on stage, one ear down and one standing up, clear daylight showing through the bullet hole.
Ben and Sophie ran to the front and threw their arms round Lara's neck. Lara licked them furiously, as if they were melting ice creams that needed tidying up quickly. She tasted the remains of a week's worth of tears that had flowed down the children's faces.
No need for any more of that, she thought, this time i'm here to stay.
