Alternative Ending

I am half way through a book named'Charm School'.

The main charcter in the story is a girl whose name is Bonny. She is very simple, polite and does not like girlish things. She reads book and knows alot about working with technology.
Her mother apply's for a new a job but Bonny can't stay alone at home and so her mother buys her a ticket to 'Charm School'.
When Bonny reaches there she is surprised to see that the girls are wearing shimmering frocks, they all have smiles on thier faces and are sitting in a circle listening to a short height woman or applying make-up.
Bonny tries to speak to them but they do not reply back niether do thier smiles fade away.
What is the mystery behind thier smiles?
Why are they all applying make-up all the time?
